Character strengths are the positive parts of your personality that impact how you think, feel and behave – in the words of VIA Institute of Character. The scientific study of strengths started at the turn of the millennia, and the result was the VIA Classification of Character Strengths and Virtues (Peterson and Seligman, 2004). Since then, hundreds of peer-reviewed articles have been published across cultures.
And now it has met the world of tarot, blending into the Northern Lights Strengths Deck!
I had the opportunity to meet Dr Seligman five years ago, at University of Pennsylvania. And yes, I was a little star struck. But the beauty of this framework is not in the person behind it, but in the practicality of it, the way it can be a tool to live a life filled with more of amazing human expression.
To me the framework of Character Strengths, which I have worked with for many years in my roles as strategy consultant and sustainability director, is perfect for a deck. The research behind it is deep and orderly, like the organic structures which allow giant trees to reach for the sky and sway with the wind. The concepts are expansive, rather than limiting, and marries well with the story telling of human expression which is tarot.
